Bluetooth Connectivity Guide
Understanding Bluetooth Profiles
TerraFlow uses standard Bluetooth profiles:
- SPP (Serial Port Profile): For data transfer from locators/GPS
- BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy): Some newer devices
- Classic Bluetooth: Most devices
You don't need to know the technical details - just that your equipment needs Bluetooth 4.0 or higher.
Pairing Best Practices
Before Pairing:
- Charge all equipment fully (>80%)
- Update device firmware if possible
- Clear any old pairings from both devices
- Turn off other Bluetooth devices nearby
During Pairing:
- Put equipment in pairing mode first
- Then search on mobile device
- Select correct device from list
- Enter PIN if prompted (usually 0000, 1234, or 1111)
- Wait for confirmation
- Verify "Connected" status
After Pairing:
- Open TerraFlow Mobile
- Go to Settings → Sensor Settings
- Select paired equipment from dropdowns
- Test data capture
- Verify data appears correctly
Maintaining Stable Connections
Range management:
- Keep devices within 10 feet (3 meters)
- Avoid metal barriers between devices
- Don't put device in pocket (weakens signal)
Battery management:
- Low battery = weak Bluetooth
- Keep both devices charged >30%
- Bluetooth drains battery faster
Interference avoidance:
- Turn off unused Bluetooth devices
- Avoid WiFi hotspots when possible
- Metal buildings can interfere
- Multiple locators in same area may conflict

Troubleshooting Equipment Issues
Locator Won't Pair
Check these in order:
- ✓ Locator Bluetooth enabled?
- ✓ Locator in pairing mode?
- ✓ Locator battery >50%?
- ✓ Phone Bluetooth enabled?
- ✓ Previous pairings cleared?
- ✓ Within 10 feet of each other?
- ✓ Correct PIN entered? (try 0000, 1234, 1111)
Still not working:
- Restart both devices
- Update locator firmware
- Try pairing with different phone (isolate problem)
- Contact equipment manufacturer
GPS Not Accurate
Check these in order:
- ✓ In open area (clear sky view)?
- ✓ GPS unit powered on?
- ✓ GPS battery charged?
- ✓ Waited 3-5 minutes for satellite lock?
- ✓ Correction service active? (RTK units)
- ✓ GPS unit mounted properly (clear antenna view)?
Still not working:
- Check GPS unit status lights
- Verify subscription active (Trimble, Eos)
- Restart GPS unit
- Check GPS works in manufacturer's app
- Contact GPS manufacturer support
Connection Drops During Use
Common causes:
- Distance: Keep within 10 feet
- Battery: Charge equipment
- Interference: Turn off other Bluetooth devices
- App in background: Keep TerraFlow in foreground
- Multiple devices: Only one locator per phone
Prevention:
- Keep phone in chest pocket or lanyard
- Disable battery optimization for TerraFlow
- Don't minimize app during collection
- Charge equipment overnight
Upgrading Equipment
When to Upgrade
Consider upgrading if:
- Current equipment >5 years old
- Frequent reliability issues
- Doesn't meet accuracy requirements
- Missing modern features (Bluetooth, GPS)
- Repair costs approaching replacement cost
Upgrade priorities:
- GPS accuracy (biggest impact on data quality)
- Locator features (depth, signal strength, modes)
- Mobile device (speed, battery, screen)
- Ruggedness (if equipment damage is frequent)
Compatibility When Upgrading
Mixing equipment brands:
- ✅ Any locator + Any GPS + Any phone = Usually works
- ✅ TerraFlow doesn't require matching brands
- ✅ Choose best equipment for each purpose
Example optimal setups:
Budget Setup:
- Samsung Galaxy Tab A8
- Device GPS (built-in)
Mid-Range Setup:
- iPad (current gen)
- Radiodetection RD8100 or Vivax vLoc3 Pro
- Eos Arrow Gold GPS
- Rycom or other Locator & Trimble Catalyst DA2 / Eos Arrow Gold GPS
Professional Setup:
- Samsung Galaxy Tab Active Pro (rugged)
- Vivax vLoc3 RTK Pro / Radiodetection 8200SG (locator + GPS integrated)
- Rycom or other Locator & Trimble Catalyst DA2 / Eos Arrow Gold GPS
