Editing Features on the Map

Need to fix an incorrect attribute or reassign a line to a different workflow? The Edit panel in TerraFlow Data Engine lets you update feature properties — like workflow, type, and form data — directly from the map view. This guide walks you through selecting a feature, modifying its attributes, and saving your changes.

Time needed: Less than 1 minute per feature

Before you start:

  • You must have edit permissions for the item
  • The project must be open in the Map view of TerraFlow Data Engine
  • Know the correct workflow and type values you want to assign to the feature

Step 1: Select a Feature on the Map

Before you can edit a feature, you need to select it so the system knows which line or point you want to modify.

  1. Navigate to your project and open the Map view.
  2. Click directly on the line or point feature you want to edit. A Form Data popup will appear showing the feature's current attributes.

The Form Data popup displays two sections: Form Data (field-collected attributes like Type, Size, and Notes) and Project Data (system-level information like Workflow, Job, and Type). This gives you a quick summary before you start editing.

Step 2: Open the Edit Panel

The Form Data popup is read-only — to make changes, you need to open the editing panel.

  1. At the bottom of the Form Data popup, click the Actions button.
  2. Select Edit from the available actions. The Edit Line panel will open on the right side of the screen.

The Edit panel displays all editable fields for the selected feature, including Workflow, Type, and any workflow-specific form fields.

Step 3: Edit Feature Attributes

The Edit panel lets you modify both the feature's classification (workflow and type) and its form data fields. The fields that appear depend on the selected workflow and type.

Editing Form Data Fields

Form data fields appear below the Workflow and Type dropdowns. These fields vary depending on the workflow and type assigned to the feature.

  1. Click into any text field (such as Size of Main(mm), By Record, or Notes) and type or update the value.
  2. For dropdown fields (such as Type of Main), click the dropdown and select from the available options.

Each workflow and type combination has its own set of form fields. For example, a Water Main will show fields like Size of Main(mm) and Type of Main, while a Telecom Cable will show # of Cables instead.

Example Form Fields by Workflow

Water — Water Main

  • Size of Main(mm): Enter the pipe diameter in millimeters
  • Type of Main: Select from PVC, Cast Iron, Ductile Iron, or Concrete
  • By Record: Enter Yes or No
  • Notes: Add any additional comments

Telecom — Cable

  • # of Cables: Enter the number of cables
  • By Record: Enter Yes or No
  • Notes: Add any additional comments

Step 4: Change the Workflow (If Needed)

If a feature was collected under the wrong workflow, you can reassign it. Be careful — changing the workflow will clear the existing form data fields.

  1. In the Edit Line panel, click the Workflow dropdown.
  2. Select the new workflow from the list. Available workflows could include: Power, Water, Gas, Telecom, Sewer, Offsets, Survey, and Landbase.
  3. A Warning dialog will appear: "Are you sure you want to change the workflow to [name]? This may lead to data loss."
  4. Click Cancel to keep the current workflow, or click Confirm to proceed with the change.
  5. After confirming, the Type dropdown will reset to Select a Type. Choose the appropriate type for the new workflow.
  6. Fill in the new form data fields that appear for the selected workflow and type.

⚠ Important: Changing the workflow clears all existing form data values for that feature. Make note of any important attribute values before switching workflows, as they cannot be recovered after the change is confirmed.

Step 5: Save Your Changes

Once you've finished editing, you need to save your changes for them to take effect.

  1. Review all fields in the Edit Line panel to confirm your changes are correct.
  2. Click the Save button in the bottom-right corner of the panel.
  3. To exit without saving, click Close instead.

After saving, the map will update to reflect your changes. If you changed the workflow or type, the feature's line style, colour, and label on the map will update automatically. For example, a Water Main (blue dashed line labelled "WM") changed to a Telecom Cable will display as an orange dashed line labelled "B".

Step 6: Verify Your Edits

It's good practice to confirm your edits were saved correctly.

  1. Click on the feature you just edited.
  2. Review the Form Data popup to verify the updated attributes.
  3. Check that the Project Data section reflects the correct Workflow, Job, and Type.

Troubleshooting

I can't see the Actions button on the Form Data popup

  • Make sure you clicked directly on the feature line or point — clicking near but not on the feature may not select it
  • Scroll down within the popup if needed; the Actions button may be below the visible area
  • Confirm you have edit permissions for this item

My form data fields disappeared after changing the workflow

  • This is expected behaviour. Each workflow has its own set of form fields, so switching workflows resets the form data
  • If you changed the workflow by mistake, click Close (do not click Save) to discard the change, then reopen the edit panel

The map styling didn't update after I saved

  • Try refreshing the map by zooming in and out, or reloading the page
  • Confirm you clicked Save and not Close — changes are only applied when saved

I selected the wrong type and already saved

  • Simply click the feature again, open the Edit panel, and change the Type to the correct value. You do not need to change the workflow to fix the type

Tips for Success

  • Review before you save. Double-check the workflow and type selections before clicking Save — changing a workflow clears form data and cannot be undone.
  • Use the Form Data popup first. Before editing, review the current attributes in the Form Data popup to understand what needs to change.
  • Edit in batches by workflow. If you need to reclassify multiple features, work through them by workflow type to stay consistent and reduce errors.
  • Note values before changing workflows. If you're switching a feature's workflow, write down the existing form data values in case you need to reference them later.
